The Story of Kullervo

The Story of Kullervo - J.R.R. Tolkien, Verlyn Flieger

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes. The story was beautifully written for an incomplete rough draft. The notes at the end of the story were interesting and informative. However, I really didn't like the way they were laid out. They were placed at the end of the story, without the aid of "note numbers" so as not to break up the flow of the text. It would have, in my opinion, been better to have included such notations in the main body of the text, so as to make it easier to follow along with the story.

Would I recommend this book to other people? Maybe. I did find the text to be a little padded out. I appreciated the addition of the manuscript of the speeches made by J.R.R. Tolkien. However, the inclusion of the same speech twice with minor adjustments was a little much. If you are interested I would suggest picking up a copy at your library. Even if you find that you don’t enjoy the notes and additional texts, the short story is worth a read.
