A Safe Place With You - César L. Baquerizo, Rachel Edgell

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to rate this highly. I think this book tells an important story, unfortunately I was unable to finish reading it. A Safe Place with You tells the story of a clinic in Ecuador, where families send their children in order to cure them of their homosexuality. I knew going into this it was going to be a hard read, and while I did find what I expected in the pages of this book, I also found it hard to read for other reasons. The writing came across as stilted, with a lot of summarizing and telling rather than showing. It honestly read to me like an outline of a story. This book was first published in South America before being picked up for publication in the US; what I read was a translation. It’s quite possible that the book in its original language was beautifully written, but I can only judge the translation I attempted to read. I rated this one star.
